Project Details:

असावी शहरे आपुली छान : Cities for People‘ is the Marathi adaptation by Sulakshana Mahajan of the landmark book ‘Cities for People’ by Jan Gehl.

Sulakshana Mahajan is a researcher in Urban and Women’s issues, with a particular focus on India. She has published several papers, articles and newspaper columns. Her writing appears in both English and Marathi language publications. She is a visiting lecturer at Sir J. J. School of Art and Architecture and Rachana Sansad’s Academy of Architecture in Mumbai.

Jan Gehl is a Danish architect and urban design consultant based in Copenhagen whose career has focused on improving the quality of urban life by re-orienting city design towards the pedestrian and cyclist.

The scope of this work was to run a campaign series on digital and social media for the duration of 3 months with various posts highlighting aspects covered in the book – particularly the ones relevant to India and specifically the ones to Maharashtra since the target audience was citizens, urban planners, civic authorities and policy makers who would read the Marathi adaptation of the book.

For more than forty years, Jan Gehl has helped to transform urban environments around the world based on his research into the ways people actually use—or could use—the spaces where they live and work. In this revolutionary book, Gehl presents his latest work creating (or recreating) cityscapes on a human scale. Sulakshana Mahajan’s Marathi adaptation makes this book available to a large number of readers in the Marathi language – much needed for the target audience in Maharashtra that really matters.
